2009 Chardonnay (PennyFarthing)
2009 Chardonnay (PennyFarthing)

How seldom today does one find Chardonnay permitted to express its true nature, resembling more a lush, sweet golden delicious apple than the oppressive toast and butter we see nowadays.

We all know that California Chardonnay has become something of a beast.

2007 Crucible

The making of Crucible is our pride and joy, truly a labor of love. This is the Student Vineyard of Napa Valley College, where Clark taught Advanced Winemaking for many years. In 2003, Dean of Viticulture Stephen Krebs tore out most of the Chardonnay vines from which Faux Chablis was made and planted two German cold weather clones of Cabernet Sauvignon. Clones 337 and 15 possess unusual characteristics uniquely suited to this cool emerging appellation.

2011 Merlot (Two Jakes)
2011 Merlot (Two Jakes)

Our vineyard is located in a site with rocky granitic soils that result in a very different expression of Merlot from the typical California profile. The persistent sunny rays at the high altitude impart extravagant color and bright pomegranate aromas with no vegetal aspect. Our proximity to Clear Lake’s afternoon cooling “lake effect” preserves these aromas. While our volcanic soils produce solid, age-worthy tannins which impart amazing ageworthiness.

2006 Meritage (Planet Pluto)
2006 Meritage (Planet Pluto)

When scientists rejected planetary status for Pluto in 2003, we took exception. “Planet” is a very old term which means “wanderer,” thus any heavenly body which orbits the sun – is a planet! It doesn’t matter that Pluto doesn’t fall into the categories established for scientific theories of planetary formation. It’s still there, wandering around our solar system, and we can call it a planet if we want to -- it’s our language, not theirs!

2008 Meritage (Diamond Ridge)

As California’s largest Cabernet Sauvignon clonal library, The challenge for our flagship blend was to make an eloquent statement of place, a blend which captures the unique attributes and displays all the aspects of this special site.

The core of the blend was equal proportions of three Cabernet Sauvignon clones. Clone 4 is the most feminine and shows a sweet core of strawberry fruit. Clone 8 possesses a refined mid-palate weight and black cherry flavors. Clone 337 has the most tannic structure and adds cassis and plum characteristic of Pauillac.

2011 Cabernet Franc (Two Jakes)
2011 Cabernet Franc (Two Jakes)

The father of Cabernet Sauvignon, this grape is among the most challenging to work with and seldom is bottled as a pure varietal. Its great vigor requires bright sunlight and a limiting soil to prevent excessive fruit shading, but its delicate aromas will also easily burn off.

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (Two Jakes)

Our vineyard on a peninsula jutting into the southeastern corner of Clear Lake is the site of the most extensive commercial Cabernet Sauvignon clonal library in the State of California. Its persistent sunny rays at the high altitude draw from each clone its unique aromatic signature, and the cooling “lake effect” prevents them from volatilizing, preserving a distinct clonal stamp on each. Different clones will develop aromas as diverse as grenadine, cassis, raspberry, carob, Asian spice and tar, with tannins and acidity equally varied.
