WineSmith 2013 Lost Chord Syrah
WineSmith 2013 Lost Chord Syrah

Our first experience with the Pierce family’s extraordinary Ishi Pishi vineyard near Hoopla in northern Humboldt County. Pat and Joachim Pierce are talented organic growers skilled in grapes and other crops. The vineyard is nestled in a sheltered clearing surrounded by forested mountains with a rich red clayey loam soil that produces full ripeness at low brix. Their skills and the site’s perfect characteristics produce wines of unrivaled density and integrity that preserve themselves without sulfites, and in time produce wines of astonishing complexity and depth that age well.

WineSmith 2004 Roman Reserve Syrah
WineSmith 2004 Roman Reserve Syrah

William Younger’s “Gods, Men and Wine” offers compelling evidence that the 1,000 year Roman winemaking tradition did not involve sulfites. In 2001 we decided to undertake an experiment in ancient winemaking, vinifying this robust syrah grown in high-altitude living granite with and without the modern sulfite addition all the experts tout as indispensable. The conventional lot, we found, was indeed cleaner, and even possessed a more solid structure. But it brought to mind a perfect but sterile construction with nobody home. Without sulfites, the same grapes offered up incredibly intricate aromatics full of mystery and soul. The difference reminded us of the extra dimensionality of flavor one finds in great unpasteurized French cheeses.

2013 Meritage - 12 pack
2013 Meritage - 12 pack

Those of you who loved the Diamond Ridge Vineyards Aspects blend will adore this blend of 81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc.

Diamond Ridge Vineyards is located at the southeast corner of Clear Lake in Lake County. One of the best sites in California for these two varieties. The Merlot is unlike any other in the State, and resembles more the wines of Pomerol, with dense structure, lush mouthfeel and a rich core of fruit. The site's high altitude dispels any herbaceous character in either variety and imparts firm tannic framing to the Cabernet Franc and an aggressive spiciness which perfectly complements the softer Merlot.

The result is a complex mixture of bright red fruit aromas: grenadine, white cherry and black raspberry which are well preserved by the lake effect which cools the vineyard each afternoon. Droughty herbs that surround the site impart “air-oir” -- sage and bay laurel elements which are apparent in the nose. The volcanic soil imparts a racy mineral energy to the palate and gives the wine a prolonged aging trajectory. After 51 months in neutral cooperage, the wine remains fresh and purple, and will repay extensive further cellaring. Delicious now or in two decades. Recommended with rosemary lamb, wild mushrooms or ratatouille.

2013 Meritage (Two Jakes) (Aspects)

Our vineyard on a peninsula jutting into the southeastern corner of Clear Lake is the site of the most remarkable Merlot in the State of California, resembling more a classic Pomerol’s density, depth and masculine tannins, though imparting an unctuous feminine texture. The 2013 was harvested in early October in warm, fair weather which achieved early full ripeness.

The father of Cabernet Sauvignon, this grape is among the most challenging to work with and seldom is bottled as a pure varietal. Its great vigor requires bright sunlight and a limiting soil to prevent excessive fruit shading, but its delicate aromas will also easily burn off.

Diamond Ridge is located in a sunny high altitude site with rocky granitic soils which force Cabernet Franc to put its energy into pushing its roots down into the rock, resulting in a lively mineral energy in the wine’s finish. These conditions develop good color and firm but refined tannins which impart amazing age-worthiness.

The Lynmar Estate vineyard just north of Sebastopol is one of the most renowned Pinot Noir vineyards in the famed Russian River.

To create a complete wine, we decided to blend clone 115, a Dijon clone noted for tannin structure and cherry fruit, with Clone 667, from which we’d get perfume and spice. We were careful not to pick overripe so we could make a wine of freshness, energy and integrity which would age well.

2010 Petite Sirah (Two Jakes)
2010 Petite Sirah (Two Jakes)

This wine is so amazing that sometimes we think we should just grow nothing but Petite Sirah. Although the wine has incredible color and density, the texture is surprisingly soft, round and feminine.

Altitude is good for this variety, which does not fare well in fog, as its thin skin and tightly packed clusters make it prone to rot. In many mountain sites, bright sunlight and water stress lead to extremely hardness, but our cooling afternoon “lake effect” develop and preserve an intense blueberry aroma and prevents field oxidation of anthocyanins, preserving an intense “Purple Haze” appearance.
