2017 Sparkling Grenache
2017 Sparkling Grenache

In the course of walking this vineyard to determine ripeness for our Red Grenache, we discovered a section quite low in color from which we decided to make a rosé. While the initial idea was an early release wine full of strawberries, we reckoned without the austerity which the Santa Cruz Mountains soils impart, so that we ended up with a wine of great richness and depth but also aromatically quite closed. While waiting for it to open up, the wine also underwent a spontaneous malolactic, causing us to scratch our heads as to its best use. Our intrepid Assistant Winemaker Mike Faulk, in a flash of brilliance, suggested we make a methode champenoise sparkling wine.

WineSmith 2013 Lost Chord Syrah

Our first experience with the Pierce family’s extraordinary Ishi Pishi vineyard near Hoopla in northern Humboldt County. Pat and Joachim Pierce are talented organic growers skilled in grapes and other crops. The vineyard is nestled in a sheltered clearing surrounded by forested mountains with a rich red clayey loam soil that produces full ripeness at low brix. Their skills and the site’s perfect characteristics produce wines of unrivaled density and integrity that preserve themselves without sulfites, and in time produce wines of astonishing complexity and depth that age well.

Although most wine experts confine their expertise to the European Vitis vinifera varieties, there are almost 100 other Vitis species, some of which make very good wine.

Dr. Norton was a 19th century breeder who crossed a wild Virginia Vitis aestivalis with an unknown parent to produce one of the most respected and widely produced reds in the U.S., with over 500 wineries offering examples.

There is, in my view, no other region in California that compares to the Santa Cruz Mountains for producing wines of distinctive terroir expression. Something about its mountain soils and mix of sandstone and greenstone, plus the lush surrounding herbs that encircle its tiny vineyards and impart their own distinctive “air-oir” gives each vineyard a unique stamp. The area is moderated by heavy Pacific influence but also lifted above the fog so that it enjoys plenty of cool direct sunlight, the perfect recipe for the grape to express itself.

'14 Meritage offers affordable profundity

Introducing Humboldt Meritage, our first release from the Pierce family’s extraordinary Ishi Pishi vineyard. These talented organic growers and the site’s perfect characteristics produce wines of unrivaled density and integrity that in time gain astonishing complexity and depth, aging graceully without need of preservatives.

We vinified the field blend without sulfites, stabilized the structure with discreet doses of oxygen, barreled down in neutral wood and ignored it for more than five years. What emerged is an indescribably alluring wine that seductively pulls you into the glass. The wine remains fresh and purple, and will repay extensive further cellaring. Delicious now or in two decades. Recommended with steak porcini, ripe époisse cheese or duck fois gras.

The 2013 was harvested in early October in warm, fair weather which achieved early full ripeness.

2008 Pinot Noir
2008 Pinot Noir

This wine’s story is quite unique. When the movie Sideways created an insane demand for California’s very limited supply of Pinot Nir, we went looking into previously unimagined sources such as the hard press “taille” from sparkling wine production. We discovered that a special crossflow filter called an ultrafilter could harvest the high tannin in these wines as a concentrate we could sell for beefing up weak reds, leaving us with aromatically wonderful Pinot Noir which then needed some color. In 2008 we bought hard press Pinot Noir from Sonoma County, Anderson Valley and Marin County and produced this blend. We found an aromatically neutral teinturier named Rubired in a Lodi vineyard and used it to supply the color and structure to support these aromatics.

2010 Petite Sirah (Two Jakes)
2010 Petite Sirah (Two Jakes)

This wine is so amazing that sometimes we think we should just grow nothing but Petite Sirah. Although the wine has incredible color and density, the texture is surprisingly soft, round and feminine.

Altitude is good for this variety, which does not fare well in fog, as its thin skin and tightly packed clusters make it prone to rot. In many mountain sites, bright sunlight and water stress lead to extremely hardness, but our cooling afternoon “lake effect” develop and preserve an intense blueberry aroma and prevents field oxidation of anthocyanins, preserving an intense “Purple Haze” appearance.

Those of you who loved the Diamond Ridge Vineyards Aspects blend will adore this blend of 81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc.

Diamond Ridge Vineyards is located at the southeast corner of Clear Lake in Lake County. One of the best sites in California for these two varieties. The Merlot is unlike any other in the State, and resembles more the wines of Pomerol, with dense structure, lush mouthfeel and a rich core of fruit. The site's high altitude dispels any herbaceous character in either variety and imparts firm tannic framing to the Cabernet Franc and an aggressive spiciness which perfectly complements the softer Merlot.
