WineSmith 2013 Lost Chord Syrah
Our first experience with the Pierce family’s extraordinary Ishi Pishi vineyard near Hoopla in northern Humboldt County. Pat and Joachim Pierce are talented organic growers skilled in grapes and other crops. The vineyard is nestled in a sheltered clearing surrounded by forested mountains with a rich red clayey loam soil that produces full ripeness at low brix. Their skills and the site’s perfect characteristics produce wines of unrivaled density and integrity that preserve themselves without sulfites, and in time produce wines of astonishing complexity and depth that age well.
|Two Jakes 2013 Petite Sirah 4 Pack||Nose: Fruity and floral with a hint of leather and mushrooms. Taste: Long grippy tannins, with hints of chocolate bitterness, medium acidity with a bit of the alcohol burn and a lingering finish. Well balanced, delicious, and easy to drink.||Not Available|
2013 Meritage (Two Jakes) (Aspects)
Our vineyard on a peninsula jutting into the southeastern corner of Clear Lake is the site of the most remarkable Merlot in the State of California, resembling more a classic Pomerol’s density, depth and masculine tannins, though imparting an unctuous feminine texture. The 2013 was harvested in early October in warm, fair weather which achieved early full ripeness.
2013 Saint Laurent (Ricci Vineyard)
This was my first year working with this fascinating variety from an experimental planting at Dale Ricci’s vineyard in Sonoma Carneros, a team effort guided by my talented colleague Dave Noyes, formerly of Ridge and Kunde.
2013 Meritage (Lake County)
Those of you who loved the Diamond Ridge Vineyards Aspects blend will adore this blend of 81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc.
Diamond Ridge Vineyards is located at the southeast corner of Clear Lake in Lake County. One of the best sites in California for these two varieties. The Merlot is unlike any other in the State, and resembles more the wines of Pomerol, with dense structure, lush mouthfeel and a rich core of fruit. The site's high altitude dispels any herbaceous character in either variety and imparts firm tannic framing to the Cabernet Franc and an aggressive spiciness which perfectly complements the softer Merlot.
2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Lake County)
Diamond Ridge Vineyards is located at the southeast corner of Clear Lake in Lake County. This remarkable site enjoys a cooling lake effect due to its close proximity to water. Its 2,000-foot altitude and clean, traffic-free air allow the sun bathe its fifteen clones of Cabernet Sauvignon in high UV, resulting in brilliant color, firm tannins and rich fruit aromas. Clone 10 is slow to ripen and holds surprising acidity and is characterized by back cherry, cocoa, and sweet anise aromas.
